Washington finalists for Capps

The Nationals are a finalist to acquire the services of free-agent right-hander Matt Capps, according to a baseball source.
If the Nationals sign Capps, he would serve as a late-inning reliever and most likely compete with Brian Bruney for save opportunities.
Many are speculating Capps could chose Washington, as it may be his only chance to close next season. If he does end up landing in Washington – or anywhere else where he may compete for saves, including Pittsburgh – don’t be scared away by his 5.80 ERA last year.
He didn’t have a great season by any means, and his xFIP and FIP were both well over 4, however he only just turned 26, and in 2008, he had a 39/5 K/BB rate. Last year was really a tale of two halves. In the first half, his K/BB rate plummeted to a pathetic 1.54, as the one thing going for him before – his control – collapsed.
In the second half though, we saw a pitcher arguably better than ever before. Great closers miss bats, and even at his best in 2008, he didn’t do that. In the second half however, Capps started throwing his slider more, and the results were fantastic. His K rate jumped up to 9.2, while his BB rate returned to elite status at 1.4. His K/BB rate was an outstanding 6.5, and his growth in K rate, especially given his age, provide hope that he can reach elite status. After all, how many closers can strike out more than a batter an inning, and walk less than 1.5 per 9? Not many. He also upped his GB% from around 30% to around 40%.
Ignore his 5.8 ERA, and his 5.33 ERA in the second half. This is a pitcher with the skills to close, and do so at a high level. Wherever he lands he’s worth a pickup, and given his 2009 season, he could be one of the best bargains you’ll get at the RP position next season.
