Does Defense Matter in Fantasy Baseball?

Have you ever caught yourself downgrading a fantasy player because they simply aren’t that good of a “real” baseball player? I certainly have. It’s just difficult to switch from a mind set where Jose Lopez is total garbage because he can’t get on base and doesn’t play an important position, to a mind set where [...]

Over the next couple of months we are going to be doing a series of previews for all 30 MLB teams, highlighting one or two interesting themes going into 2010. We will also be including interviews with several bloggers and analysts. We don’t want to be excused of having an east coast bias, so we’ll [...]
Phillies offer 2 yr/$12 mil deal to Rodney.
December 22, 2009 by Ryan Gilbert

The Philadelphia Phillies are considering signing Fernando Rodney to help bolster the back end of their bullpen. For the Phillies, Rodney would provide a safety net for Brad Lidge, as well as a bona fide set up man and fireballer, one thing the Phils have been lacking. All of the Phils relievers seem to be [...]
More on Javy Vazquez

Just how good is Javier Vazquez? How hard could it possibly be to answer that question? I mean, he’s 33. He’s been in the big leagues since he was 21, and has been incredible durable, with 198+ innings every year since 2000, and at least 154 every year of his career. He’s thrown almost 2500 [...]

Yankees close to acquiring a starting pitcher?

UPDATE: Multiple sources saying it wont be Zambrano or Harang. Worth pointing out that the Yankees have been in talks with the Pirates about Zach Duke/Paul Maholm on multiple occasions over the past couple of years, so don’t rule that out. Both are young, cheap, mid-rotation starters, although not worth a top prospect.
According to [...]
Position Preview: Shortstop

On to shortstop! This year, clearly the more shallow of the middle infield positions. There is a good top-5, but after that… ouch. Things really start falling off. We have some solid upside picks but no one really stands out. This is the year to draft a shortstop early.
Something of interest: My ranking of the [...]

Not a busy day in the baseball world Friday, so I decided to start my 2010 bullpen previews in the AL East.
New York Yankees:
Closer – Mariano Rivera.
Setup – Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, David Robertson?
Best pitcher – Rivera.
Rivera is as good ever. In 2009, Rivera’s ERA was under 2 for the sixth time in seven [...]
